Weekend in Oklahoma City

Yesterday (Saturday 7/8), I rode 66 from Joplin, MO through the "corner of Kansas," 1/2 way through Oklahoma to Oklahoma City (actually Moore, OK) where my friends, The Fankhauser's, live. Bill Fankhauser was my roommate sophomore year at The Citadel, and we haven't seen each other since 1989. He recently retired from the USAF and now works in the private sector.
Catching up with Bill and meeting his family over the past couple of days has been fantastic. Saturday evening we went into Oklahoma City and ate dinner then walked along the riverwalk. It was a very nice evening.

This morning (Sunday 7/9), I attended Mass with the whole Fankhauser family at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Norman, OK. It was very encouraging for me to be staying with a family who goes to church together after we had breakfast as a family. (And no, this wasn't because of me being there) Worship is a regular thing in the Fankhauser house... regular attendance at Mass, parochial school, etc... It was refreshing.

St. Mark's was wonderful!! Lots of life in the parish. The energy was palpable and the activity was authentic. There were no gimmicks or come-ons, just families young and old gathered to worship God and share the sacraments. The children were in the service and there was no "special" children's talk. They participated as they were able. The parish didn't seem to cater to any particular group or dynamic of people, they just offered good, solid, worship. No, I am not Roman Catholic, but I had a strong sense of God's presence with this congregation.
There are many studies out there about what Gen X, Gen Y, and Millennials "want" out of worhship. The thing that keeps consistently popping up through those studies is authenticity. Do what you do and do it well... be who you are, worship how you worship, make it dignified and meaningful, good music, good liturgy, not gimmicky or trying to attract. Then make your worship mean something by the work you do in the world together in mission and outreach opportunities. I think St. Mark's hit it on the head, and the testimony was the 250+ people that were in that service! They were many things about that worship service, but mostly they were authentic.

After worship it was bike cleaning time... then dinner with one of my seminary professors, the Rev. Bill Carroll, who is now the Canon to the Ordinary in the diocese of Oklahoma. Bill and I went to the Cattleman's Steakhouse for an full Oklahoma City experience! It was great to catch up with Bill.

Challenge to self: Try to be as authentic as I can be with everything that I do, and let God continue to guide my decisions.

Challenge to Trinity: Figure out where our authenticity is... are we true to how and why we worship? Are we trying to do too much? How can we be more "authentic" with what we do and how we do it?
