Sunday in New Orleans, LA

I went to worship this morning with Anne & Will at St. Martin’s - Metairie, LA. It was an enjoyable Trinity Sunday and a treat to worship with Anne and Will. The Church was a beautiful and welcoming space. The people at St. Martin’s were very friendly and hospitable.

Magnificent Carved Doors

The service was a Rite II Eucharist (Prayer B). I was struck by some of the simple liturgical differences. Good, just different (not my style). They sang some hymnody out of Lift Every Voice and Sing (I love that hymnal!) The sermon was interesting and engaging. Overall, a great worship experience. Anne and Will seem very happy there.

After church we went to the Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art in the park and walked  around. It was a beautiful garden park with awesome art creations on display. Needless to say, New Orleans is hot and humid this time of year and subject to pop-up thunderstorms in the mid afternoon.

Tomorrow, I leave for Texas. It has been a very restful weekend in New Orleans. I am thankful for close friends that put up with me. 😜 As I sat today and heard preachers speak of Trinity, all of them that I heard spoke of relationship. As I’ve said before, relationship is a big part of my spirituality and how I embrace a vision of the divine. Our relationships with one another are mirrors of our relationship with God and our relationship with God is a mirror of our relationship with one another.

In today’s gospel reading, when Jesus talks about being glorified by the spirit who will declare everything that Jesus is to us, it’s because of relationship. (John 16:12-15) We know the spirit because we know Christ. We know the creator because we know Christ. We are who we are because of each other.

Anne and I talked about our time at UNCA and discussed the classes that we took together. Part of who we are comes from the experience we shared. I feel that our common life in Christ works the same way. We are who we are because of our shared experiences. We are all part of one another.

Challenge to St. James: Think about who “we” are together as a community of faith and how we are part of one another as we seek to serve the living Christ.

Challenge to Self: Be patient and observant of people you encounter and your surroundings, taking it all in and letting it become part of you.
