Up the Florida Cost to Tallahassee!

It was extremely enjoyable to spend Sunday evening, Monday, and Tuesday morning with my Florida family. I hope that I get to see the missing folks soon. (Shout out to Jessica and Sarah!) Today I headed to Tallahassee, up in the armpit of the panhandle of Florida.

I touched base with the Hills who wanted to meet me for lunch! We enjoyed all-you-can-eat shrimp and fish at the Bayport Inn, near Hudson, FL. Maryanne and Ed attended St. James when they were staying with their son in Greeneville before they moved back to Florida. It was great to catch up with them.

The reason that I rode all the way to Tallahassee was to meet an old friend for breakfast in the morning. It will be good to see Rusty Burke (FMA “ghost” class of 86). It’s been a while. The people connections on this pilgrimage have been incredible. Rekindling great relationships that go back my whole life (in my Florida family’s case). Tomorrow I get to see Rusty after 9 years (last time I was in Florida in 2016). We have been friends since 1982 (43 years!) Hard to believe.

Today’s ride was long, but beautiful until the rains came about 10-15 miles out from Tallahassee. I was soaked. By the time I arrived, it had stopped raining and was starting to dry up. I arrived in Tallahassee later than I normally like to get somewhere. I need to be more conscious of my travel time. Enjoy the pictures.

Today I was thinking about the intensity of the short term relationships that we have. I haven’t known Ed and Maryanne long, but I feel comfortable and connected around them. They are good folks. Thinking about Jesus and his closest followers, he wasn’t “friends” with Peter, James, and John his whole life. He met them on the side of the Sea of Galilee at the onset of his 3 year ministry. They obviously got to know each other well and spent lots of time together, so their relationship was intense. How many intense friendships do we have that we have made over the past few years? It’s not something we think of often.

Challenge to St. James: Be aware of your friendships. Do you have any “real close” friends? Do you have any friends at a distance that you keep up with? How do you make new friends? Is church a source of your friendships?

Challenge to Self: Appreciate the connections and relationships you’ve experienced over the years and how they have helped you grow to who you are today.
